Hraunfossar waterfalls
Dive into Adventure at Hraunfossar Waterfalls!
If you're looking for a slice of Icelandic magic just a hop away (10 min by car) from our cozy lodge, then Hraunfossar Waterfalls is where it's at! Tucked away in the stunning landscape of West Iceland, Hraunfossar Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the West!
Unlike traditional waterfalls that tumble from a single source, Hraunfossar consists of numerous smaller streams that flow out from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The water emerges through porous lava rock and cascades gently into the Hvítá River, creating a breathtaking sight of crystal-clear water against dark volcanic rocks.
Just a short walk from Hraunfossar, you'll find Barnafoss—another stunning waterfall with a tragic yet captivating tale behind it. The name "Barnafoss" translates to “Children’s Falls,” and the legend tied to this waterfall adds an eerie yet poignant touch to your visit.
According to the story, two boys from a nearby farm were playing near the falls when they tragically fell into the rushing water. The mother, devastated by the loss, ordered the stone bridge to be ruint across the falls, so such a tragedy would never happen again.
According to the story, a bridge once spanned the narrow, turbulent channel of Barnafoss. Two children, believed to be siblings, tried to cross the bridge as their family went for Christmas Mass and they were alone at the farm. They stumbled and tragically fell into the waterfall. In the aftermath, the mother, devastated by the loss, had the bridge destroyed so that no other children would meet the same fate.
Whether you visit in the lush summer months or during winter’s snowy season, Hraunfossar is beautiful year-round!
Hraunfossar is one of our favourite waterfalls in the are. As west Iceland is not as crowded as the south of Iceland it is still a quite peaceful atmosphere, the location is truly magical and the waterfalls are easy accesible for visitors with a well-maintained walking path and viewing platforms.
Let's go chase some waterfalls and make some memories! 📸 Located just off Route 518 and just a short drive from our lodge.
